After finishing up our morning jobs on this fine Saturday morning, Emma came and asked if she could use the play necklaces to decorate for "Christmas". They girlies have done this before. They drape the cheap plastic necklaces all over furniture, beds, light switches, etc. to make it like Christmas lights and then use other things (like scarves) to build a Christmas tree and use all sorts of other stuff to build Christmas in our home. I think it's super cute and creative.
The only problem. Dallas is not a fan of Christmas until Christmas. And today was Saturday so Dallas was home. "Ah ah ah!" Imagine an adorable Dallas wagging his fingers at the girls. "You can't celebrate Christmas yet. We haven't had Thanksgiving! Why don't you play pilgrims instead?"
Now imagine Emma with a crinkled-up nose and questioning look, "Pilgrims?"
"Yes, those are the people who started Thanksgiving." Dallas then gave Emma and Alice and Lucy a little lecture on the story of Thanksgiving. At first Emma was not convinced and still preferred the idea of making Christmas, but Dallas persisted and then I helped him out a bit and before you knew it, the girls had gone full-blown PILGRIM!
They ended up loving "pilgrims" and after setting it up, wanted to keep it that way so they could play it with their friends later that night. Lucy was the turkey, Emma was an indian, and Alice was a pilgrim. My favorite part was when they chased the turkey.
They brought up all their toy food from the basement, and the rocking horse so Emma the Indian could ride it, and used blue blankets and the bathroom rug to make the ocean, step stools to make the boats, and draped blankets over desks to make tee-pees. I mentioned they could throw Lucy's stuffed sharks into their ocean but they wanted to keep it safe...so no stuffed sharks in the ocean.
Here they are jumping from their boats into the ocean.
A little video of them swimming in the ocean.
Here's Alice playing with the babes. I don't remember if they got assigned a part.
Lucy is so excited about being the turkey.
Alice is excited for this feast they have prepared.
More cute babies playing with their favorite toy - wipes :)
Emma explaining to me how this whole "pilgrim" thing works. I love how creative our girls are. Emma is great at thinking things up and making them happen.
Video of Emma describing how they are playing "Pilgrim".
Here is Emma doing a "photo shoot" at Burlington Coat Factory while I looked for boots for myself.
Later on we decided to go on a shopping trip. I had high hopes for this shopping trip. I thought we would get a lot done and it would be fun. I thought Dallas would be with us but I forgot he had frisbee at 2 p.m. No matter - it would still work out. And initially, it did. But then once the time crunch hit, the bliss ended. I got cranky with the girls because we didn't have time to look at things, and they kept asking to buy stuff that we don't need, etc. I think I would have not gotten so cranky but we had to hurry and meet up with Dallas so he could pass the babies off to us.
I have been trying to teach the girls to "take a deep breath" when you feel angry. Also, the other day, when I got angry, I told them I was going to work on taking a deep breath and think of ways I could react other than getting mad. I want them to realize that we are all working on getting better. Anyway, I got cranky and I wish I hadn't. I feel bad that our shopping trip that started out so fun ended not so great. I am writing about this three days later...and I don't remember if I did something to make it all better in the end. That night we watched our friends' kids and Dallas got the girls to bed. Usually if there was a problem during the day, I would talk about it a bit more at bedtime but that didn't happen. Sad face.
I really want to be a better mom. This week we are working on being calm and I am excited to focus on "taking a deep breath" and thinking of a better way to react.
